After Care
1. After 2-3 hours, remove the bandage gently and wash the tattoo with warm water and mild, unscented soap. Pat the tattoo dry gently with a clean towel or paper towel. Do not rebandage yet. Let the tattoo air out for at least 20-30 minutes.
2. Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of Aquaphor, A&D Ointment, or a similar product.
3. Wrap the tattoo in plastic wrap before going to bed to prevent the fresh tattoo from rubbing against anything or collecting dust, debris, or animal hair.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 in the morning, and whenever the skin feels dry for the next 3 days. If your tattoo will be exposed to debris, dust, or rough clothing at work or elsewhere, we highly recommend wrapping it in plastic for that duration.
5. After 3 days, switch to using shea butter or an unscented lotion like Lubriderm, Curel, etc., until the skin returns to its pre-tattoo condition. Remember, hydration is important. If you’re feeling itchy (which is normal), do not scratch. Hydrate!
6. Do not soak your tattoo in the tub, sauna, jacuzzi, or go swimming while your new tattoo is healing. Showers are fine.
7. Stay out of sunlight and tanning booths until the tattoo is healed, which takes at least 2-4 weeks.
After your tattoo has healed, keep in mind that extreme sun exposure over the years can fade your tattoo. This can be minimized by using a strong sunscreen, at least SPF 25.
8. Do not rub, scratch, or pick at your tattoo while it is healing! Improper healing, loss of color, and/or infection could occur.
9. Your tattoo should heal within 2 weeks. By one month, your tattoo should be fully settled.
10. Always consult your tattoo artist if you have any questions or concerns about your healing process. General healing questions can be sent to SpaceTimeLoveChicago@gmail.com.
